Small business website checklist: what every local service website needs
Ten things your website needs to bring in calls, from Day Web Design in San Tan Valley. Questions? Call (480) 531-3048.
Quick answer: A local service business website needs a tap-to-call phone number at the top, a clear list of services with a page for each one, pages for the cities you serve, your Google reviews, a contact form that sends leads straight to your phone or email, fast mobile pages, and the technical basics that help Google and AI search tools understand your business: schema markup, a sitemap, Google Search Console, an FAQ page and an llms.txt file.
Most customers find a plumber, painter, tree service or mover the same way: they search on their phone, look at a couple of websites, and call the one that looks trustworthy and easy to reach. Use this checklist to see whether your website is doing its job, or what to ask for if you are getting a new one.
1. A phone number customers can tap
Your phone number should be at the top of every page and work as a tap-to-call link on mobile. Add a sticky call button on phones so it is always one tap away. If you take texts, say so. Every extra step between a visitor and your phone costs you calls.
2. A clear page for each service
One long list of everything you do is hard for customers and Google to understand. Give each main service its own page that explains what is included, who it is for and how to book. A page about water heater repair has a much better chance of showing up for a water heater search than a single page that mentions it once.
3. Pages for the cities you serve
People search with their town in mind, like "painter in Gilbert" or "tree service in Peoria." City pages that are genuinely useful, with the services you offer in that area and how to reach you, help you show up in those local searches. See how this looks on our own Arizona city pages.
4. Proof that you are real and trusted
Show your Google rating and reviews, real photos of your work and your team, and who owns the business. Link to your Google Business Profile so customers can read more reviews and leave one. Real photos beat stock photos every time.
5. A contact form that actually reaches you
Some customers would rather type than call, especially after hours. A short form asking for name, phone and what they need should send each request straight to your phone or email. Test it yourself every so often.
6. Fast, mobile-friendly pages
Most local searches happen on phones. Pages should load quickly, text should be easy to read without zooming, and buttons should be big enough to tap. Compress your photos so they do not slow the site down.
7. An FAQ page written answer-first
Answer the questions customers actually ask, like how pricing works, what areas you cover, your hours and how to book, with a direct answer in the first sentence and details after. This helps customers, and it is the format Google's AI answers and tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can understand and quote.
8. The technical basics for Google and AI search
- Schema markup that tells Google your business name, phone, services and service area
- A sitemap submitted in Google Search Console, so Google knows every page exists
- A unique title and meta description on every page
- An llms.txt file that tells AI search tools what your business does and where you work, and a robots.txt that lets them read your pages
Nobody can honestly guarantee a #1 spot, but a site built with these basics is set up to be found.
9. Easy updates
Prices, hours, photos and services change. If updating your website takes weeks or a login you have forgotten, it will fall out of date. Make sure you know exactly how changes get made and how fast.
10. A way to see what is working
You should know how many people visited your site and how many calls and form requests it brought in. Without that, you are guessing.
