How to optimize your Google Business Profile: a checklist for local service businesses

Step-by-step tips to get more calls from Google Maps, from Day Web Design in San Tan Valley. Questions? Call (480) 531-3048.

Quick answer: To optimize your Google Business Profile, verify it, pick the most accurate primary category, use your real business name, set your service area (and hide your street address if customers do not come to you), keep your hours and phone number current, list your services, write a clear description, add real photos, ask for reviews and reply to them, post updates, and link to a website whose name, phone and cities match the profile.

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "tree service in Gilbert," the map results usually show up first, and those come from Google Business Profiles. Your Google Business Profile is what shows in the map results, and your website backs it up. Here is a checklist you can work through in an afternoon.

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business on Google, or go to Google Business Profile, and claim it. Google will ask you to verify that you own the business, often by video, phone or mail. Until it is verified, your edits may not show and you have less control over the listing.

2. Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals for which searches you show up in. Pick the one that best matches your main work, like "Plumber," "Tree service" or "Electrician," then add a few secondary categories only for services you really offer.

3. Use your real business name

Use the name on your truck, sign and paperwork. Adding extra keywords or city names to the business name goes against Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.

4. Set your service area

If you go to your customers, set a service area with the cities you cover. If customers do not visit your location, you can hide your street address so only the service area shows.

5. Keep hours and contact info current

  • Regular hours, and holiday hours for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's
  • A phone number you actually answer
  • A link to your website, and to your contact or quote page if you have one

6. List your services and write a description

Add each service you offer, with a short plain description. Then write a business description that says what you do, where you do it and what makes you different, in plain words, without stuffing in keywords.

7. Add real photos

Upload real photos of your work, your team, your truck and your logo, and keep adding new ones. Real job photos tell customers more than stock images do.

8. Ask for reviews and reply to every one

Reviews help you rank in the map results and help customers choose you. Ask every happy customer, send them your direct review link and reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm, helpful way. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews walks through it.

9. Post updates and answer questions

Post updates about recent jobs, seasonal tips or holiday hours. It shows customers and Google that the business is active.

10. Make your website match your profile

Your business name, phone number and cities should be the same on your profile, your website and other directories. A website with a page for each main service and city you serve backs up the profile and gives customers more reasons to call. 11. Check your results

Google Business Profile shows how many people found you, called, asked for directions or visited your website. Check it every month to see what is working. Your website should be mobile-friendly too, since most of those clicks come from phones. If your site is not bringing in calls, see how do I know if my website is bringing in customers?

How Day Web Design helps

We build every site to give it the best chance: local SEO pages for each service and city you serve, Google schema markup, an FAQ page written so AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers can understand it, an llms.txt file and a robots.txt that lets AI search tools read your site. We also set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap. Each month you get a report showing your site traffic and how many calls and form requests your site brought in.

We build your demo site first, so you see it before you pay a dime. After that it is $99/month with $0 down, your first month is free, there is no contract, and if you don't love it in the first 30 days, you pay nothing. See pricing, our customers and the FAQ, or request a free demo. Prefer to talk? Call or text (480) 531-3048.
